Featured artist of the week: PORCH

Neue Bands gibt es mittlerweile wie Sand am Mehr. Und das Problem ist immer dasselbe, sie hören sich alle mehr oder weniger gleich an. Entweder wie die Punk-Rock-Opas von Green Day, Linkin Park oder Avril Lavigne, aber alles schön stormlinienförmig. Dementsprechend schwer ist es neue und gute Bands zu entdecken, die es auch wirklich ernst meinen mit dem Thema Musik. Um so mehr hab ich mich gefreut, als ich auf die Band PORCH gestoßen bin durch ein ehrensenf Feature inklusive einem Interview mit einem Bandmitglied. PORCH, das sind 4 Jungs aus dem Süden der Republik, aus dem schönen und ländlichen Bayern und alles andere als Provinzpop und Mainstreamrock. Von Sony BMG sind sie schon für ihre Authenzität gelobt worden und auch Ullmann von der Band Tomte sagte der Formation nur Gutes nach. Seiner Meinung nach, höre man keinerlei Vorbilder aus den Liedern von PORCH heraus, was nicht ganz meiner Meinung entspricht. Vorbilder haben die jungen Nachwuchsrocker jedoch durchaus, vor allem MGMT und Sonic Youth haben zu dem Sound von Porch beigetragen. Aber neben ein bisschen MGMT und Sonic Youth kann man noch andere berühmte Vollblutmusiker heraushören. Da und hier mal ein bisschen Bloc Party gemischt mit ein paar Gramm The Rapture und angerichtet ist der wunderbar feine Klang des Quartetts. Beeindruckend ist zudem auch der Ehrgeiz der 4 Bayern, die nicht nur am Wochenende bis zu 18 Stunden proben sondern auch die logitische Meisterleistung vollbringen, sich überhaupt zusammen zu finden, wohnen sie doch alle verstreut über Bayern. Und was mir natürlich auch sehr gut gefällt ist die unverwechselbare Stimme des Sängers, Levin. Was mich sehr freut ist, dass ich nun hier exklusiv ein kleines Interview mit Levin präsentieren darf und als Bonus gibt es noch 2 bisher unveröffentlichte Songs, die erst letztes Wochenende aufgenommen wurden. Leider sind PORCH noch bei keinem Label unter Vertrag, aber glaubt mir, das kommt bald. Was auf jeden Fall auch bald kommt ist das Album von PORCH und zwar im Herbst. Aber keine Angst ich schreib wieder, wenn’s so weit ist. Schade, dass ich sie noch nie live erleben konnte aber das kommt schon noch. Interview mit Levin, dem Sänger der Band Porch:

Get Yourself Into It: Wie war das ehrensenf Studio?

Levin: Es war überraschend klein und sehr privat. Aber wunderbar hübsch, eine sehr gute und ja vielleicht sogar familiäre Atmosphäre. Es hat sehr viel Spaß gemacht und die Leute sind einfach durch die Bank nett.
Es gibt einen Raucherraum, was schon mal gut für mich ist und es gab ständig guten Kaffee. Ansonsten von außen ist das Studio sehr unscheinbar und zwischen zwei Bars gezwängt. Kulissen und eine Couch sind die einzigen Dinge die in einem kleinen Raum stehen. Um einen herum stehen Belichtungsgeräte.

GYII: Hat sich gleich nach dem Interview eigentlich ein dicker Produzent von SonyBMG bei euch gemeldet? Was habt ihr euch selbst von so einem massenmedialen Auftritt erhofft?

L: Also erstmal nein. As hat sich keiner gemeldet von Aony, aber wir arbeiten daran. Das haben wir uns aber auch gar nicht davon erhofft. Ich habe mir eigentlich nichts davon erhofft. Ich dachte mir nur, cool Fernsehen, du redest gern, du siehst gern andere Städte also ab dafür. Aber insgeheim habe ich mir natürlich gedacht, dass vielleicht mehr leute unsere myspace seite besuchen und in unsere Musik reinhören. Aas hat sich dann ja auch bewahrheitet. 10 000 Besucher in 4 tagen. Das ist sehr gut und hat uns sehr gefreut. Aber wegen einem Interview gleich einen Plattenvertrag zu erwarten, so naiv sind nicht mal Indierocker.

GYII: Wie läuft das mit den Freundinnen wenn ihr immer am Wochenende beschäftigt seid?

L: Sehr gut. Ich wohne in München und meine Freundin auch, also kann man das sehr gut verbinden. Unter der Woche bin ich bei meiner Freundin und am Wochenende fahren wir beide nach Hause. Meine Freundin kommt nämlich auch aus meiner Gegend. Also ist es perfekt. Zu den anderen: da sieht es eigentlich genauso aus.

GYII: Wie hat das Internet mit Internet TV, Musikblogs und MySpace das Leben der Künstler verändert? Seht ihr das als Band eher positiv oder negativ?

L: Da habe da eine gespaltene Meinung. Zum einen hat man als junger Musiker eine sehr gute Platform z. B. MySpace, bei der man seine Musik einem sehr großem Publikum präsentieren kann, aber andererseits, naja ist das auch langweilig. Musik vom Computer für den Computer und keine Cover mehr, keine Leidenschaft mehr, sondern nur noch Musik um sich berieseln zu lassen. Nichts für mich.
Es herrscht einfach ein viel zu großes Angebot mit den unterschiedlichsten Musikrichtungen. Die Platten gehen verloren. Die fast schon fantastische Plattensammlerleidenschaft stirbt aus.
Und man denkt sich… cool da ist Bonaparte in meiner Freundesliste, aber man weiß halt auch, dass die Band niemals auf dieser Seite ist. Man kann Leute oder Musiker nicht am Computer kennenlernen. Man muss sich leider immer noch die Mühe machen mit den Menschen selbst zu reden.
Internet TV: Finde ich gut, weil im normalen Fernsehen einfach nur noch Quatsch gezeigt wird. Im Internet zwar auch, aber man hat bei der Bandbreite an Seiten einfach eine viel größere Auswahl. Ich schau zwar nicht selbst im Internet Fernsehen, aber es ist eine gute Sache. Für uns war es auf jeden Fall sehr gut und nützlich.

Meanwhile new bands exist like ten a penny.  And the problem is always the same, they all sound more or less the same. Either like the “punk rock grandpas” from Green Day, Linkin Park or Avril Lavigne, but everything nicely streamlined. Accordingly hard is it to discover good new bands who a really serious with the topic music. So much the more I was delighted as I bumped into the band PORCH who across an “ehrensenf Interview” including an interview with a band member. PORCH, that are four boys from the south of the republic, from the pretty and rural Bavaria and it is everything else than “province pop” and “mainstream rock”. Sony BMG already praised them for their authenticity and also Ullmann from the band Tomte only said good things about them. According to him u can’t see any similarities to any role models in their songs, what not really suits my opinion. Indeed the young up-and-coming rockers do have role models. Especially MGMT and Sonic Youth contributed to the sound of PORCH. But besides MGMT and Sonic Youth you can feel the influence of other thoroughbred musicians. Here and there a bit of Bloc Party, mixed with a few gram of The Rapture and the wonderfully fine tone of the quartet is ready to be served. Furthermore impressive is the ambition of the four Bavarians, who not even rehearse up to 18 hours per weekend but also perform a logistic master stroke by managing to meet, even though they are all distributed across Bavaria. And what I certainly also like is the unique voice of the vocalist Levin. What delights me very much is the fact that I may present a exclusive   interview with Levin and as bonus there will be additionally two to date unpublished songs which were recorded only last weekend. Unfortunately PORCH are not under contract yet, but believe me that’s in not too far future. What is absolutely arriving soon is the new album of PORCH, coming this fall. But don’t be afraid I’ll write again when the time has come. A pity that I never had the opportunity to experience them live, but there will be a time for that too.

An interview with the singer Levin from PORCH:

Get Yourself Into It: How was the ehrensenf internet TV studio like?

Levin: Well, I was surprised that it’s actually pretty small but has definetely a very personal touch and is beyond that wonderfully neat. And besides that there is a terrific domestic atmosphere and all the people working are really nice. So I’ve made a good experience! Ah yea and they also had a smoking room and nicely brewed coffee so both things sweeten my stay. Well the studio itself is hard to recognize because it’s jamed into 2 bars. And everything that’s in the small room is like a couch and a motion link and of course some spotlights.

GYII: Has some big producer from a company such as SonyBMG just called you right after the show and asked you if you would like to get signed to his company? Did you have any expectations to such a big event liek being on TV?

L: Firstly there haven’t been any producers offering me a deal and there hasn’t been anybody calling from SonyBMG but I hope that’ll work out. Anyway we didn’t expect anything like that to be honest I didn’t have any aspiration at all. I just thought like “Oh cool let’s get on TV cause I like to talk and I like to travel here we go!”. But on the sly I was hoping to draw more visitors to our myspace site which then came true. 10000 visitors in just 4 days which was awesome and made me happy. But not even Indie Bands expect the big music deal just after some interview so we don’t either.

GYII: Tell us about your personal life. I heard that some of you have girlfriends how to reconcile your band life with those long rehearsels on the weekend and a serious relationship?

L: That works very well. Since I live in Munich and my girlfriend too this works like a charm. During the week I’m staying at my girlfriends flat and on the weekend we both go home and thus my girlfriend is from the same spot as me it’s perfect. To tell you about the other band members it’s pretty the same way.

GYII: How has the internet with all those new features like internet tv, music blogs and myspace changed the life of musicians? Do you think as a band this shift is rather positive or negative?

L: I’ve somewhat different opinions on that. On the one hand as a new musician there a wonderful stage to step on, e.g. myspace, where you can reach like everything and tell them about your music. But on the other hand that’s simply dull. Music produced just for PC made by PC no more Covers, means like no more passion and you’re supposed to be exposed to a constant stream of music. It’s not the thing I want to do. En clair the supply of different genres and different music is way too much. And all the vinlys are dropped away and also the fantastic collecting of vinyls itself is like dying off. If your on myspace and you have Bonapartein your friend list you think that’s cool but you also know that those bands are never on this site. It’s hard to come to know people or musician through your PC instead you still have to bother to talk to those human beings yourself. I really go for the internet tv because the range of different content and site is much bigger than in the normal tv. I have to admit that I don’t watch internet tv but I still think it’s a good development. For us as a band it helped us a lot.
